Janet Lail's husband calls her a ``water junkie.''

Of course, she is married to the district manager of the South Blount Utility District.

``My water cup is my constant companion,'' she laughed, hoisting the yellow jug into the air. ``The first thing I do in the morning is fix my water. I drink water all day.''

Drinking water is especially important to Janet Lail because she suffers from chronic pylonephritis, a kidney disease she was diagnosed with in 1978 and that has put her in the hospital every month for the past four years. That is, until last June.

Since then, her hospital visits have been fewer and further between. First she went 10 weeks without a hospital visit, then 14, then seven.

``I thought it was a fluke or something,'' she acknowledged. ``When you've been sick like that for so many years, you don't want to analyze why (you're doing better). I didn't want to talk about it; I was afraid it might go away.''

But her husband, Isom Lail, and her doctors were wondering what was going on. They looked at her medications, her fluids ... but nothing had changed.

Nothing, that is, except the water.

The South Blount Utility District, of which the Lails are customers, opened its new plant in June 2004 and started providing unfluoridated water. Isom Lail pointed out the change to his wife late last year, but she was reluctant to talk about it until now.

``I told Isom I am willing to show my medical records because I knew people would say I'm just saying that because I'm his wife,'' she said Thursday.

After all, it was Isom Lail and Plant Manager Henry Durant who recommended the South Blount Utility District Board not fluoridate the water. Lail insists his wife's health was not part of the equation, though, and she confirms that neither of them made the connection between the unfluoridated water and her improvement until many months after the decision was made.

``There's no regulation requiring (fluoride), and one of our promises to our customers was to produce the cleanest, safest water with the least chemicals required,'' Isom Lail explained.

Community and operator safety also was a factor, he added.

``As we did this, we looked at the pros and cons,'' he said. ``Just because everybody else does it this way doesn't mean we're going to. We're going to investigate it first.''

Janet Lail, who described herself as a ``massive reader,'' helped her husband with the research in early 2004. She read a book called ``The Fluoride Deception'' and decided to read a book in support of fluoride as well.

She couldn't find one, she said, and thought, ``That doesn't make sense.''

``Who knew?'' she asked. ``(Fluoride) was just something we'd always had.''

No benefit for adults

South Blount Utility District has come under fire for not fluoridating the water, but Isom Lail stands behind his recommendation to leave fluoride out. He noted that, according to the American Dental Association, fluoride is beneficial to teeth only for those between the ages of 4 and 14. After that, he said, it has no benefit, but has been linked to diseases such as cancer and osteoporosis.

``We're not doctors; we're water providers,'' he said. ``By not putting it in, we may not be doing any good to the kids, but we are definitely not doing any harm to any of our customers.''

Besides, Janet Lail added, ``If it's so good and necessary, why is it not one of the things you have to put in the water?''

Despite her own feelings, she said she expected ``a raging debate'' over fluoridation and has been surprised at how little controversy it has generated. In March, the South Blount Utility District received five phone calls from customers wanting fluoride and 13 from customers wanting the water to be left the way it is, Isom Lail said.

``Probably less than 1 percent of our customers have been involved,'' he said. ``The majority really don't care.''

Counting the weeks

As South Blount Utility District awaits the results of a fluoride literature review being conducted by McGill Associates, the district manager's wife continues counting the weeks until she has to go back to the hospital. Right now, she's up to 10.

``Not having fluoride in the water has not reversed my condition,'' she stressed. ``I'm not going to get well, but I have stabilized.''

Isom Lail noted that at least one other kidney patient has reported an improvement in his health to the South Blount Utility District.

``We did not solicit this information; it was volunteered to us,'' he added. ``How many more out there are reaping the benefits?''

Cautious of getting people's hopes up, Janet Lail said she considered going back to drinking fluoridated water to determine if that is really what has made the difference in her health, but her husband and her doctors told her not to. Instead, she said, her doctors will ``have to look at that'' the next time she is hospitalized.

In the meantime, she is enjoying getting up, getting dressed and generally ``having a life.'' But most of all, she is enjoying a reprieve from the pain she likens to rubbing a Brillo pad over scorched skin.

``It was the last thing I thought of before I went to sleep, and it woke me up every day for years,'' Janet Lail remembered. ``Everyday when I wake up, I ask, `Whose body is this that I'm living in right now?'''

FLUORIDE SUBMISSION and POPULATION CONTROL

And you thought that everything the government does is "for you"? Best that you change your thinking......The first occurrence of fluoridated drinking water on Earth was found in Germany's Nazi prison camps. The Gestapo had little concern about fluoride's supposed effect on children's teeth; their alleged reason for mass-medicating water with sodium fluoride was to sterilize humans and force the people in their concentration camps into calm submission. (Ref. book: "The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Farben" by Joseph Borkin.) The following letter was received by the Lee Foundation for Nutritional Research, Milwaukee Wisconsin, on 2 October 1954, from Mr. Charles Perkins, a chemist:
"I have your letter of September 29 asking for further documentation regarding a statement made in my book, The Truth About Water Fluoridation, to the effect that the idea of water fluoridation was brought to England from Russia by the Russian Communist Kreminoff. "In the 1930's, Hitler and the German Nazi's envisioned a world to be dominated and controlled by a Nazi philosophy of pan-Germanism. The German chemists worked out a very ingenious and far-reaching plan of mass-control which was submitted to and adopted by the German General Staff. This plan was to control the population in any given area through mass medication of drinking water supplies. By this method they could control the population in whole areas, reduce population by water medication that would produce sterility in women, and so on. In this scheme of mass-control, sodium fluoride occupied a prominent place. ...

"Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual's power to resist domination, by slowly poisoning and narcotizing a certain area of the brain, thus making him submissive to the will of those who
wish to govern him." [A convenient light lobotomy]
"The real reason behind water fluoridation is not to benefit children's teeth. If this were the real reason there are many ways in which it could be done that are much easier, cheaper, and far more effective. The real purpose behind water fluoridation is to reduce the resistance of the masses to domination and control and loss of liberty."

"When the Nazis under Hitler decided to go into Poland, both the German General Staff and the Russian General Staff exchanged scientific and military ideas, plans, and personnel, and the scheme of mass control through water medication was seized upon by the Russian Communists because it fitted ideally into their plan to communize the world. ...

"I was told of this entire scheme by a German chemist who was an official of the great IG Farben chemical industries and was also prominent in the Nazi movement at the time. I say this with all the earnestness and sincerity of a scientist who has spent nearly 20 years' research into the chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and pathology of fluorine--any person who drinks artificially fluorinated water for a period of one year or more will never again be the same person mentally or physically." - CHARLES E. PERKINS, Chemist, 2 October 1954.

Quoting Einstein's nephew, Dr. E.H. Bronner (a chemist who had also been a prisoner of war during WWII) in a letter printed in The Catholic Mirror, Springfield, MA, January 1952. Excerpts follow:
"It appears that the citizens of Massachusetts are among the 'next' on the agenda of the water poisoners.
"There is a sinister network of subversive agents, Godless 'intellectual' parasites, working in our country today whose ramifications grow more extensive, more successful and more alarming each new year and whose true objective is to demoralize, paralyze and destroy our great Republic--from within if they can, according to their plan--for their own possession.
"The tragic success they have already attained in their long siege to destroy the moral fiber of American life is now one of their most potent footholds towards their own ultimate victory over us.
"Fluoridation of our community water systems can well become their most subtle weapon for our sure physical and mental deterioration. ...
"As a research chemist of established standing, I built within the past 22 years, 3 American chemical plants and licensed 6 of my 53 patents. This organic calcium-fluoro-phosphate, derived from proper foods, is an edible organic salt, insoluble in water and assimilable by the human body, whereas the
non-organic sodium fluoride used in fluoridating water is instant poison to the body and fully water soluble. The body refuses to assimilate it.

Earliest available Russian fluoride evidence: "I, Oliver Kenneth Goff, was a member of the Communist Party and the Young Communist League, from May 2, 1936, to October 9, 1939. During this period of time, I operated under the alias of John Keats with number 18-B-2. My testimony before the Government is in Volume 9 of the Un-American Activities Report for 1939.
"While a member of the Communist Party, I attended Communist training schools in New York and Wisconsin ... and we were trained in the revolutionary overthrow of the U.S. Government. "... We discussed quite thoroughly the fluoridation of water supplies and how we were using it in Russia as a tranquilizer in the prison camps. The leaders of our school felt that if it could be induced into the American water supply, it would bring about a spirit of lethargy in the nation, where it could keep the general public docile during a steady encroachment of Communism. We also discussed the fact that keeping a store of deadly fluoride near the water reservoir would be advantageous during the time of the revolution, as it would give us opportunity to dump this poison into the water supply and either kill off the populace or threaten them with liquidation, so that they would surrender to obtain fresh water.

Months after the construction of a new state-of-the-art treatment plant, board officers for the South Blount Utility District still wrestle with the issue of fluoridating the system's water.

At the district's Tuesday board meeting, board officers asked an engineering company, now working with the district on a grant for water lines, to put together a list of reasons for fluoridating and not fluoridating the water.

It's not an easy issue to get a handle on, according to vice-president of the board, Virginia Morton.

``The information is endless,'' she said.

The board is considering an outreach to its 13,000 customers about the issue, but what material the district will send out has not yet been decided.

``We're going to try to get something to the customers,'' said Tom Abbott, board secretary. ``We'll decide something at the next meeting.''

They took no action to survey or poll the customers at the Tuesday meeting.

South Blount Utility began selling water from its plant in June last year. The treatment plant uses membrane filtration technology and draws its water from the Tellico River.

Customers have come out for and against fluoridation, and they have been articulate, said Morton. Two Web sites have been built with information in support of and in opposition to the use of fluoride in public water sources.

About 200 people in the past month have let the South Blount District office know, by letter or phone, their opinions on the issue. The majority, according to board officers, favor not fluoridating.

U.S. Public Health Services endorse the use of fluoridation in public water supplies, but it is not required by state or federal law.

Residents debate need for fluoride

The debate over fluoridation continued Wednesday at South Blount Utility District's monthly board of commissioners meeting.

The district's decision not to fluoridate water at its new plant, completed this year, has drawn staunch support and opposition from customers. Both sides made an appearance at the meeting Wednesday.

Commissioners decided to continue collecting information on fluoridation, look for a way to educate customers about the issue, and get an accurate poll or survey of what customers want. They did not reverse their decision on fluoridation.

Customer comment

Celeste Meunier voiced concerns about the effect lack of fluoridation could have on the dental health of South Blount's customers, particularly families that can't afford regular dental care. It wouldn't cost much to add it to the water, she said.

``It's cheap,'' Meunier said.

Some families have sought fluoride supplements. Walgreen pharmacist Heather Webb said demand for the supplements has increased a lot since September.

Larry Campbell didn't think fluoride should be added to the water. He's concerned about the effects fluoride could have on the health of South Blount customers. Like others at the meeting, he referenced studies and information on the Web to support his position.

Mike Biddle, a customer who couldn't make the meeting, spent his Thanksgiving holiday building a Web site to inform people of the hazards of fluoride use.

People can also register on the site in support of leaving fluoridation out of South Blount's water supply.

Biddle is worried about the long-term effects of fluoride.

``It builds up in your body,'' he said.
